The Ethics of AICD Deactivation

Course Abstract:

Objectives

  1. Describe the purpose of AICDs and factors affecting their optimal utilization.
  2. Identify ethical principles related to the deactivation of ACIDs.
  3. Delineate components of a policy on AICD deactivation.
  4. Identify stakeholders in an organization who should be a part of AICD deactication policy development.

Course Description:

"The Ethics of AICD Deactivation" is presented by Margaret Mahon, PhD, RN, FAAN, FPCN. The number of automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (AICDs) have increased as a result of the clinical benefit to patients with advanced cardiac disease. This teleconference discusses the AICD device, its placement, management, and AICD therapy. Discussion continues related to the deactivation: pertinent principles re: core ethical duties to patients, employees, and organizational stakeholders. The six statements included in the position statement on AICD deactivation by NHPCO are discussed. Three (3) case studies are used to provide examples of different patient scenarios related to AICDs.
